| Legends of Australia No.1 Frederick
Charles Howard (1842) reprinted 1989 | ||
| The basis of the tale is about a young aristocrat convicted of murdering his
father-in-law and transported to Botany Bay. He was not innocent although
his wife believed that he was. She sets out for Sydney in an attempt to find
him. There was a trip by mail coach to Bong Bong driven by a typical John
Lang character, a convict, who had captured the doctor on the convict ship
and held him prisoner, a very funny episode. She found her husband who was
assigned to her - for life. This is a lively and enjoyable tale of early Australia. written by someone who was there. There are characters like convicts and bushrangers, mounted police and a currency lad or two. The story runs at a fast pace with no moralising or dull long descriptive passages. It is surprisingly modern in its storytelling. It is in fact the foundation novel of Australian literature with all the later aspects like bushrangers, convicts, currency lads, grazing life and mounted police. The only things missing are a flood and a bush fire . Legends of Australia No.1 Frederick Charles Howard was first published by James Tegg in Sydney in 1842. It was reprinted by Mulini Press, Canberra, in 1989
