This is RVinceD's Seven Pines/Fair Oaks/Savage's Station, Peninsula Campaign, 1862. It has a detailed to-scale map, new buildings, trees etc. There are 5 historical scenarios for Seven Pines/Fair Oaks (including a full 1st day scenario) plus an alternate scenario examining what would happen if Longstreet had obeyed orders. I have added Randomization Lines to give alternate setups and 2 alternate scenarios depending on how far the initial attack penetrated. The scenarios are linked by .dlg files so can be played as a sequence. The 5th battalion of Abercrombie's brigade will not respond to brigade orders unless the 4th battalion is also deployed in the Seven Pines scenario, but can be given individual orders. This is a side effect of the technique I chose which also allows these to randomly appear in the randomised games. There a 3 historical scenarios for Oak Grove/King's School-House plus a speculative scenario for the eastern flank (the 1st day of the Seven Days battles). These scenarios have been edited since the previous version to correct some errors that crept in as the order of the units in the OOB was changed for randomization line purposes. The Oak Grove scenarios have been updated after finding a more likely location of King's School-House. There are 4 historical scenarios for the engagements at Garnett's, Golding's and Peach Orchard/Allen's Farm and for the battle of Savage's Station plus a speculative scenario for the retreat leading to Savage's Station (the 2nd, 3rd & 4th days of the Seven Days battles). To play the branched sequence of games for Seven Pines/Fair Oaks either choose "play the battle" or play the "Twin Houses-DH Hill Attacks" scenario to skip the Gettysburg video. In either case save the game at the end and choose "next scenario". The Randomization Lines work most of the time, but the randomization routine can go up a blind alley and be unable to produce a game, so if you have saved you can try again, or use the auto saved game. To play the 4 scenarios of the 3rd to 5th days of the Seven Days battles as a sequence of games, play the Engagement at Garnett's scenario & choose "next scenario" at the end. Please post any comments and requests to http://mattslow.proboards37.com/ To install: (unless you are short of hard disk space) make a copy of your Gettysburg folder and rename it as Peninsular. Unzip into the Peninsular folder with "Use Folder Names" and "Overwrite Existing Files" checked. Say yes if asked to overwrite any read only files. Honors for each battle in the Seven Pines/Fair Oaks battle will be displayed on the flag after each battle and an overall final score is given. These are extracted into a sub-folder of the Peninsular folder called 'Flags' when you un-zip. If your operating system is using the default of "hide common extensions" you will not see ".exe" etc. Make a shortcut on the desktop by right clicking on lee.exe, "send to" then "Desktop (create shortcut)". When you have had enough Oak Grove, Seven Pines & Savage's Station, delete the Peninsular folder & shortcut, no need to restore. Graeme http://smx.iblogger.org/SMG.htm ************************************************************************************* From RVinceD's design notes: SEVENPINES May 31st and June 1st, 1862 McClellan has split his army in half. Porter, Franklin and Sumner are north of the Chickahominy and Keyes and Heintzelman are south. Keyes is the most advanced with Heintzelman covering the bridges far to the rear and probing south towards the James River. McClellan always favored the James to the York River, but the CSS Virginia (Merrimack) ironclad kept him from this move. Additionally, he was forced (and at one point given a direct order) to move northward and link up with McDowell who was headed south (when in fact, McDowell never did come to join McClellan because of all the fear that Jackson's Valley campaign gave the Union government). The Virginia ironclad is no longer an issue with the capture of Norfolk and the arrival of the Monitor. So McClellan would prefer shifting his based to the James River. JE Johnston was originally going to hit Porter at Mechanicsville before McDowell could join McClellan (in fact he had gathered his army near the bridges). When he learned that the former was not coming, he reverted back to Longstreet's suggestion to strike Keyes while he was all alone. The plan was for Smith, with Longstreet, to strike from the north and DH Hill and Huger to strike from the south. Longstreet, not wanting to report to Smith, moved south and took command of that flank. His delay, for whatever reasons one wishes to believe, caused the failure of the battle. It was past noon before DH Hill even began his attack, when JE Johnston was under the belief that the battle would already have been won by that time. As such, reinforcements were able to support Keyes and stop DH Hill. Longstreet finally came up in full strength in the evening and planned to renew the attack in the morning. He did, but was surprised at the strength of the Union forces. He was stopped, and then pushed back. McClellan felt it was a victory because he gained all of the ground he lost. Lee (Johnston was wounded) believed it was a victory because of the destruction of one Union Corps. True North is SMG Map North-East Scenarios include: DH Hill Attacks; 1PM, May 31st Hill Attacks Caseys first line of defense alone. Variants: Sumner has trouble crossing the river Sumner arrived in the night Smith waits no longer Second Day, Longstreets Decision; 7AM, June 1st Longstreet plans to finish off the Yankees by an aggressive attack Variants: Kearney falls back to 3rd line Kearney attacks and stops Longstreet Longstreet Follows Instructions; May 31st, 3PM, Longstreet initiates the attack, will Sumner arrive in time? Purely speculative where Longstreet attacks on the left flank. Variants: Sumner has trouble crossing the river Sumner arrived in the night Smith waits no longer ***************************************************************************************** OAKGROVE June 25th; Day 1 of 7 Days Battle 3 weeks go by since the Battle of Fair Oaks / Seven Pines. RE Lee is now in command. He now agrees with JE Johnston's original idea of concentrating troops from neighboring states (something he would not allow Johnston to do). He re-organizes his army and selects his key generals (and will continue to do so for the next 2 months). Troops were sent directly to the Valley to support Jackson and this was purposely noted in the newspapers to keep McDowell to the north. In the meantime, Lee dusts off Johnston's original plan to attack Porter (who is now all alone on the north bank of the Chickahominy River). Secretly, Jackson was to leave the Valley (which he did successfully) and attack the flank (which he never did … did not make it in time). On the opposite side, McClellan wants to keep Lee off balance and orders an advance on the south side of the river to push closer to Richmond. He had no idea that most of the enemy units in front of him had moved northwest towards the approaches to Mechanicsville. Things would have been different if he made a more aggressive advance. True North is SMG Map North-East Getty04 Battle of Oak Grove; 8AM, June 25th McClellan attacks Richmond to draw Lee away from his right flank. Variants: Slocum's division presses forward ******************************************************************************************** SAVAGE'S STATION June 27th thru 29th - Days 3 thru 5 of 7 Days Battle The next days are lost due to many reasons. Toombs attempts to hit the enemy where their line crosses the river while Gaines' Mill is raging, but he is stopped. Next day, he attempts it again, and is again stopped. Nothing happens. RE Lee is thinking of his next plan. He needs to know what McClellan is doing. Ewell moves towards White House and reports that McClellan is shifting his supply lines to the south. Lee plans to move AP Hill and Longstreet around the enemies left flank and try to cut him off. Jackson, DH Hill and Magruder were to hold McClellan by a vigorous advance. Broken bridges slow up Jackson and DH Hill. That leaves Magruder and he advances and follows the retreating Union. Sumner decides to defend at Savage's Station. The remainder of Porter's and Keyes' corps (both battered in battle) are sent to Malvern Hill. Heintzelman did not want to fight and he, unknown to Sumner, left and headed south. Franklin followed suite, but, hearing the guns, turned around to give aid to Sumner. As a side note: there are place names at Savage's Station on the map noted as "Slave Quarters". I repeated this in the scenario. I just want anyone reading this to know that I only followed what I found in the maps that I had access to. I suppose it would be easy to change the place names to simply "Cabin's". Either way, in no means do I imply anything derogatory to anyone.
